I still don't get it
I still don't get it, you can get a HD quality stream on a DVD simply by switching to a better codec *now*. 1080 is supposed to be 5 times the data (according to Pioneer's page anyway), I can put a movie into 700MB in MPEG4 or DIVX, surely thats only 3.5GB of data for a HD TV version of the movie. Thats not even a single layer DVD.

So why the new disc? I know that BlueRay dates from 2002, which I guess predates the new compression formats, which causes me to think they didn't anticipate the better compression (correct or not?)

Suppose this:

Chinese combo MPEG4/DIVX/XVID/JPEG/MP3/VCD/SVCD/DVD/CD are cheap and common today (mine cost me 69 Euros).

The Chinese add a HDTV interface to the box and upgrade the firmware a little to support higher resolution streams.

That succeeds in Asia, just like VCD did because all the technology pre-exists and is dirt cheap.
Bollywood, Anime etc. support it like they did VCD and delivery MPEG4 or DIVX on DVD.

Meanwhile Hollywood has backed another more complicated format. With players and discs costing substantially more because its all different.

Rampant piracy ensues filling the gap between the format the customer wants and the format Hollywood delivers, with hilarious consequences....
