Betamax
Betamax did have the whole movie on the Tape just as VHS did. In the early 80s Beta was out first and that's what you could rent. I remember renting the Beta Max machine and movies which were all on one Tape. I believe the reason the Beta Max lost the standards battle was because Sony wouldn't license the technology to anyone else while who ever created VHS did. In the end there was just more VHS out there and Beta Max fell into a niche. Hmmmm sounds like a computer company I know of.
