Summary: Blu-ray has won
HD DVD is NEC and Toshiba.
It is not available yet.
It holds 15GB, 30GB dual-layer, 20GB rewritable.

Blu-ray is Sony, Panasonic, Philips, Samsung, HP and Dell.
It is already available.
It holds 25GB, 50GB dual-layer, and may be able to hold 150GB using 6 layers.

Media costs only matter once the products are available. From history, media prices start over $10, but must quickly drop to under $2 each for consumer acceptance. Then it declines to around $0.50 after several years. This pattern was followed for CDR, CDRW, DVDR, and DVDRW. Dual-layer DVD+R just entered the market around $20, but I expect them to be under $5 by JAN.

BetaMax lost to VHS because the BetaMax could not hold an entire movie. Either of these technologies will handle a full movie using dual-layer.

DVD-R is losing to DVD+R because DVD+R has a better technological foundation so it advances quicker. Even though DVD+R entered the market later, it is faster than DVD-R, and has moved to dual-layer consumer recording faster.

Blu-ray is entering the market first, has more companies supporting it, and has higher capacities than HD DVD. The article does not mention any advantages for HD DVD except that the media costs less today while there are no products. It sounds like HD DVD has already lost, but NEC and Toshiba are hoping to win financial concessions by appearing competitive.
