I think you're missing it
The design puts the LEDs behind the surface and has the housing built into the moulding. It is not just some LEDs behind a translucent case or installed in holes in the case. Apple is not trying to patent warning lights, LEDs or fancy cases. They are trying to protect the new iMac design since copyright seems to have failed them in the past.

Maybe they'll also use these on laptops - iBooks already have a similar feature for the sleep indicator (it slowly pulses orange behind the case so when it's off, you can't tell there's a warning light there at all).
