This thing is a way of putting indicator lights into a housing without putting holes in it, that's it. Instead of a lamp being installed in a hole in the case, it is behind the surface and shines through.

Given that Apple is so often copied (remember the iMac look-alikes), can you blame them for trying to protect their design IP? You must have forgotten how MS shamelessly ripped off the original Mac interface. Apple tried to protect their IP using copyright but failed, patents seem to be the new copyright. Incidentally, when Java Swing promised a way of easily making interfaces device independent, both Apple and MS were very quick to threaten action against anyone copying their]/b] interfaces.

Microsoft patented clicking on a PDA, Gillette have 16 patents on one of their razors - yup, 16 on a small device with zero moving parts.

How about you take some of your own advice and wait until you see the new iMac and Apple's implementation of this before passing judgement.
