Why failure is unavoidable.
First, if your "geek" enough to want something like this, you probably already pieced it together with existing hardware.

Second, these diverse technologies change to rapidly to invest all the dollars in one machine. A new DVD format comes out and you replace the DVD player, no big deal. But with this you have to replace everything.

Third, look at how game boxes are used. Kids will grab a game box to take to their room, their friends house, etc.. Mom and dad aren't going to care for that when they want to watch a movie and the "box" is in the basment with Jr. and his friends.

Forth, to many "subscriptions" attached to it. Let's see, $10 a month for TiVo subscription, another $10 a month for "extened" services", another $10 to play games "on line", and of course you have the satelitte/cable bill, the internet bill, and who knows what wlse. The fact of it is that it will cost you a couple hundred dollars a month to "own" such a device.

Sorry, Joe and Jane average just don't see the "value" required to get them to buy into something like this...
