No, not really.

I'm curious: Do you really think that my transistor radio has an operating system in it? How about my cassette deck, tube receiver, and power tube amplifier? Perhaps my Revox open-reel 4 track recorder? How about my Rhodes, Clavinet, Hammond B-3, and Minimoog? The microphones and mixing table? The Crown amplification or JBL speaker system?

Nope; no OS in any of them.

Your statement exposes a bias that many of us in IT posses, but it is inaccurate all the same. Most, if not all, of my favorite "consumer electronics" devices operate just fine without an operating system.

Hmm ... perhaps that is why they operate just fine, because they have no OS.

Computing is still an immature market. Someday they may live up to the hype; but that day is not today.
