All things have an OS
You do realize there is an OS in your Stero and TV right? They seem to work just fine. So why wouldn't a PS2 or X-Box do the same? The fact is that PC would work just fine because the company selling it to you controls the hardware and software installed. No IT guy needed you just plug it in and put CDs and DVDs in.

Personally I'd like a console to be able to access my media stored on my PC or a server in my home office. DRM gets in the way though. I want a console that will access Myth TV. Sweet program and you can store 100s of movies for quick instant access. Not search through stacks of VHS and DVD cases looking for a movie to strike your fancy. Just query the genre, the actors, studio, or what ever and pick from the list. I haven't tried the component of Myth TV for using as PVR and I don't have video capture card as yet. Now the bigest problem I have with this set up is I don't want a big whit box roaring next to my TV. Give me a console to like the PSX that can access Linux and I'll buy it assuming it does what I want. Otherwise I'll have to design my self a compact thin client with a remote for my living room. Since my brother inlaw is a mechanica engineer he can design a case that fits a home theatre system.
