Aircraft Safety and EM Radiation
My career includes 10 years certifying avionics systems for the FAA. We NEVER identified ANY susceptibility of properly maintained aircraft systems to radiation from Gameboys or whatever. It was the airlines that imposed the limitations -- and then it was just on take-off and landing. Aircraft today fly in an environment of incredible radiation, from nearby or direct lightning strikes to military electronic beams that are so secret that they won't even tell you what and where they are (they will run tests on your aircraft and just tell you "pass-or-fail"). Now, if due to poor maintenance practices, there were a flaw in a system's shielding that, by any remote possibility, did allow some influence by the personal toys, I would really like to learn about that at 30,000 feet, when the effect was minor. Remember that systems fail for all sorts of reasons, and there is a pile of redundancy in the cockpit for cross-checking, and the ground controllers are constantly monitoring the flight path. Nevertheless, flight crews persist in doing things like landing at the wrong airports, and they have a vested interest in manufacturing excuses for any goof that they might perpetrate -- just another hypothesis.
