Risk Perception / Aircraft
1) People perceive risk differently for some good and, from my perspective, some odd reasons. People who stand to benefit by taking a risk tend to find the risk unimportant. In general, people who see no benefit to risks they are subjected to by others tend to go ballistic. The biggest risk taken by the average Americans is riding in a car. There are not many of us who are willing to give that up.
(2) The Smithsonian's Air & Space Magazine did a technical article on this subject this month. The short answer is that it is the FCC & not the FAA that outlaws the use of cell phones on aircraft. On the other hand, I see why airlines don't want cell phones used on aircraft and I don't care to be the one who has to die in order to convince the author that there is a problem.
