Your statement "One thing I can tell you: if you are concerned about the use of mobiles on aircraft, just consider the engine management and safety systems in your car the next time you phone home on the freeway. They are as equally susceptible to inference as those on an airplane."
Part of the safety system on an airplane is a magnetic compass. It is used for navigation in case of an emergency.
Haven't seen a car yet that is navigated with a magnetic compass, emergency or otherwise.
