Scare Tactics for $$$
If the plane can be brought down by a cell phone, why doesn't it crash when taking off thru the Air traffic control radar, which bathes the plane in thousands of times more RF than any puny cell phone. Planes also routinely fly through RF rich environments when near FM, AM, or TV transmiters and such. They don't crash there...do they?

The whole cell phone thing has never made any sense to me, except as a way to force you to use the air-phones in the seat backs.

It's all about the money.

Here's another one...why can you use your cell phone when at the gate or on the runway...but not a CD player?

I suspect it's to force you to listen to their harrangue about how to use a seat belt or put your tray table into it's upright locked position.
