A minor bit of anecdotal evidence
I thought that the reason cell phone usage was banned during takeoff/landings was to prevent possible interference with radio comms during this somewhat critical moment. I do not know if that can occur. However, in our office cubicle environment, we use the Nextel phones and we always know when a call is coming because all of the computer speakers in the area start crackling or clicking moments before the phone rings. It threw everyone the first couple of times it happened, but now everyone just reaches for their phone when the speakers go off.
