Shall we let a plane crash first?
As an airline pilot let me assure you I read all sorts of stuff that you can't find in any magazine/newspaper, or on the Internet. So what you attribute to rumors in some cases, at least, have real stories behind them. No, no plane has crashed yet. Shall we wait until one does? No one seems to be able to explain the strange events that have happened. The ones I've read usually affect the navigation equipment, and/or the autopilot functions coupled to that. The 10,000 foot rule is merely a compromise to buy us altitude and airspeed should something happen. (It's an FCC issue since the FAA has no jurisdiction over any of the PED's). The plane I fly has 144 computers, and is literally kept flying ALL THE TIME by their interaction (fly-by-wire). I would prefer to keep things on the conservative side, even if it means keeping people from their techie toys during the shortest (but most critical)times of the flight.
