This also allows large amounts of non-volatile memory to be incorporated directly into combinational logic. Think: single cycle reprogramming of microcode and single cycle task switching. A dynamic reconfiguration of logic to match application requirements. This allows less circuitry to accomplish more functionality. Result: smaller chips and lower power consumption. Think of it as a programmable logic/CPU hybrid.
