Contrary to misconception
As far as I can tell the Roman legions didn't lose committment or talent, but the enemy got better. Massive waves of people from central Asia pushed the Germans and other peoples onto The border of the Roman Empire.
As steelmaking fanned out from Central Asia, the "barbarian" races got better weapons, and with excellent cavalry, Sun Tzu's extraordinary force.
In my view, the Roman Empire fell because it got new enemies that were militarily stronger. (Viking peoples with amazing military commitment and great Navies).
Perhaps even more than weapons, military strategy poured out of China through word of mouth. Avars, Turks and Later Mongol hordes probably communicated strategy across their empires using employees from countries with some literacy. (eg: chinese or arabs).

The message in here is that the wealthy relatively unprotected underbelly of Microsoft is a soft target for hardened, powerful, Linux hordes. Lock up your women, gentlemen.
