Myself, I have faith in the American people and way of life.

I hate to say this (it WILL ruffle feathers) but as I have traveled around the globe and had the opportunities to visit and know people I see a stark difference in Americans and others. Americans have this "can do" and "never surrender" attitude that is simply not present in most other cultures.

Yes we do tend to have a chip on our shoulders, but we are also ready to kick the tar out of anyone that thinks they can knock it off. A case in point, out of all the hijacked airplanes the ONLY time I have heard about the passengers putting a stop to it (and giving their lives) was in the US on 9-11. There is an American mind set that we would rather go down fighting than kiss anyone's backside.

I was in Japan a few years ago and there was a minor "demonstration" by some college kids. (Have no idea what it was about.) and the thing that surprised me was that a lone cop car showed up, two officers got out and told a crowd of 200 - 300 to break it up and move along and they DID! Had that been the US the cops would have required a whole bunch of backup and even then they might have a fight on their hands.

Perhaps it's because the US had to do things the hard way and fight for it's independence and established a set of rules (Constitution) that says they need bow to no one. Perhaps it comes from settling a very tough land and only the strong survived. What ever it is, it's there and it can't be denied. And yes, a good many people from other lands are jealous and resentful of it. (Unless they are whining for our help and protection of course.) To bad for them...
