Don't think is about demise
Just about not being what they once were.

Having 99% of the PC desktop market just means they have little room for growth there. They can just lose it. What happens if 20% of desktops go Linux? Nothing in my mind, Microsoft will still make bundles especially if their other markets take off like that X-Box but I have my doubts on the whole console business these days.

Now if the X-Box goes towards a entertainment center, meaning it's you DVD player, digital TV tuner, PVR, and game playing center then you have something worthwhile. What would be interesting is if you could loud X-Box games onto you PC and via the network play them on your X-Box. No more switching disks. That would be great. Also if you could load DVDs onto the PC and keep a library with quick access. If Microsoft can pull that off then they keep the the Desktop market and increase thier X-Box market big time.
