Rumors of their demise have been greatly exaggerated.
I suppose as a reporter there is a certain amount of fun in speculating what might happen at some distant point in the future. Of course such speculation rarely comes true but it is still fun.

If Microsoft has proven anything it is that they are very capable in turning the "ship" to take advantage of a situation. (Remember the internet?)

Yes I grant open source is making a run at them, and even winning very minor skirmishes, but as we see open source is starting to run into the real problems with patents and that problem is going to do nothing but escalate. (So says Bruce P. and Linus T.)

We have all heard the line, "The bigger they are they harder they fall". The only problem is no one remembers the pre-requisite, first you gotta be able to knock them down and I see nothing capable of doing it.
