"Sort of" thoughts
It seems that the whole idea of a business is to dominate your market, squash competitors, and block the rise of new competitors--you do it, or it gets done to you. This is human nature, and in the past we've tried to moderate it with anti-trust laws and regulations. (We like to pretend we're lightening the regulatory load, but heaven help us if we really do.)

I don't think we can say Intel or Microsoft are inherently evil nor should we support them blindly. AMD (and the late, great Cyrix) are resposible for bringing processor prices crashing down and making hardware accessible to most of us. This doesn't seem to have hurt Intel's bottom line at all and really shouldn't. The competition should be viewed as a technology driver.

Understand that I like Microsoft products and third party programs that run on MS. I use MS and MS compatible stuff all the time. My objection is that MS is too expensive. Apple hasn't been the counter weight to MS that AMD was to Intel. My personal hope is that Linux will force MS into becoming a competitive and affordable operation. Let's face it: $200-$300 for a retail OS upgrade is just a bit absurd if Dell is paying $35! This is an instant lesson in how to support the big and quash the little. My fear with MS is that they will use their current power, program lockins, and disinformation campaigns to ruin Linux before it can take hold as Intel did Cyrix.
