RE: Laptop makers adopt 3G Gobi chipset
It's about time a company like Qualcomm did this in the
mobile data market. Here in East Africa, some cell phone
providers either offer CDMA 2000, HSDPA, or EV-DO
services. Therefore if you have an expensive modem that
offers only one these features, then you're screwed. I wrote
here about Zantel's EV-DO service offering last year
throughout Tanzania: http://goafricago.blogspot.com/2007/03/zantel-ups-
stakes-with-new-mobile-data.html
Hopefully, Kenya will step up to the plate and offer
something similar. I'm told Safaricom (East Africa's most
profitable company by far) is soon about to roll out 3G
services in Nairobi and other major cities like Mombassa.

Again, it's ridiculous for people here in Africa to have to
think about all of these different mobile Internet access
technologies since no one is going to buy a data card (USB
or PCMCIA) for each solution that's offered by their cellular
operator. Too costly. A chipset like this will definitely be
an attractive solution in the laptop market because it
unifies everything in a way that WiFi 802.11 b/g did for
consumers and hardware manufacturers.
