Why not Vista?

LOL, couldn't resist. I suspect that, on such marginal hardware, users will be dissapointed with the XP. Variant, yes, it will run what XP runs, however, these machines just don't have a lot of horsepower.

You can run Linux quite well, and XP not on the internet, probably quite well. The problem happens if you want to be on the internet. Toss in defender, an AV (good luck if you use Norton, it will bog the fastest machine built today), anti-malware (if not using defender) and a 3rd party firewall (if you don't trust the built in XP firewall). Add in the auto-preload of Office/IE, and all the other "services" and you may well end up with a really marginal experience.

MS has to get it's act together and build an OS (not enforce a deprecated one onto low end OEMs) that is secure in and of itself and doesn't required the resources even Home Basic needs.
