DCMA and DRM Should Be Illegal
So here's the scoop if you build a piece of hardware and
can make it at least hard for consumers to use it with
anything but your software, media, etc. you make a ton of
money. That's why regulation exists. Customers buying
media in other formats should not have to convert it to use
Crapple software and vice versa. They are not stealing it
and the media should be treated as a separate purchase
that they can use on any hardware. Apple is just abusing
customers. It's that simple. Look at how they won't even
work with Netflix to allow you to watch on demand video
on your Crapple. Sure Netflix should at least offer it on
Linux as well since their set top boxes use Linux instead of
just Windows and XBox, but it's in Apple's, and on the PS3
Sony's, best interest to screw you on watching on demand
movies from Netflix so you're buy them though iTunes,
Sony's media service, etc. instead. Again the users paid to
watch the content, but because of corporate stupidity, or
genius depending on how many shares you have, they
don't play ball and screw the consumer because in the end
it leads to more money for them. Most consumers aren't
going to do what they should and ditch their iPods and
OSX whenever Crapple screws them, or use self control and
not purchase products with these problems. Most aren't
even aware it's a problem until they decide to exercise
their right to try a different product. They'll just, for
example, buy it at a much higher price from iTunes
instead, or install Windows on their Apple machine.
Meaning that although they didn't steal anything, they end
up having to do without a service they already paid for,
buy the stuff twice, or buy and install another OS. This is
really something that needs to be regulated or just be
outright illegal. I can't look at this situation and say that it
is fair to consumers and corporations alike. I have to agree
with Voska here and also say "This not a case of copyright
infringement. Therefore it is an abuse of poorly written
law." Corporations come out way ahead with this.
Obviously the same thing is happening with most media.
Do most people really care if it's RMA, MP3 or AAC, no and
all media players should allow support for all formats with
5% or more usage. Meaning that if Apple doesn't want to
support Real directly they still shouldn't interfere with
people using Real content if Real provides a decoder, etc.
and the Real flies shouldn't have to be converted to an
Apple format to be used which would effect their original
quality. Copying compressed music creates generations
and you have quality loss when companies make you
convert. Still coming from a company that sues bloggers
and attacks employees private e-mail lists this is hardly
surprising. baceman007.blogspot.com post is iFascist. Still
there are excellent alternatives to proprietary computing all
together. The real problem is that we tolerate this crap at
all. Still I don't understand the comments from people
defending Apple. They are a big corporation out there to
make lots of money. Even if you like their stuff you need to
realize that they will screw you as much as they feel they
can get away with if it equals profits. This is what big
corporations do when their is no resistance from people,
governments, etc. It makes sense from a financial
standpoint. Someone also said that the 3 1/2 million
people who own iPods, can't be wrong, etc. Well huge
numbers of people make bad decisions all of the time.
Almost all Americans continued to use gasoline even after
the middle east, especially Saudi Arabia, tried to shut
down our economy in the 70's. All environmental concerns
aside, and there are a lot, other fuels were available even
in the 70s yet we continued to use gas and probably
inadvertently fund terrorism. So I guess if the whole nation
can be wrong about something that big, it's not unheard of
that they may have all been caught up in the mystique of
the iPod more than it's after sales problems and
properties. This bad decision helps fund proprietary lock
down of our information which is a much bigger issue in
general than just if your new Usher RMA can be used on
your iPod. Just look at the hard drive failure rates in the 80
gig and above classics!!! The Zen is a far better machine by
far, compared to the over priced super thin cased iPod
nano which still has non replaceable memory and a non
replaceable battery, well unless you're good with tools, yet
superiority is not enough to sell a product. My grandfather
used to say, "if you wrap a piece of **** in the right box
people will buy it." Well that seems to be what Apple is
doing lately as they ignore their other products for the
iPhone. Many silver and black iMacs simply froze out of the
box when they were initially released, iMacs still have no
PCMCIA expansion slot, the whole Mac Book/Seagate hard
drive issue..... Leopard still has the ARD exploit even at
10.5.4, Mac Shadows had to take down the code that
people were using to fix this exploit that has been there
for 18 versions of the operating system now, well
depending on how you're counting, at least 15 if you never
used ARD on Panther, because Apple wants to pretend that
the exploit doesn't exist. Microsoft tried a lot of security
through obscurity, remember, and it didn't work out so
well. Anyway, consumers need to wake up. You hardly even
really own the products you buy half of the time. I could
go on about licensing, cell phones, etc. but I'll stop here.
Please for the love of God demand your rights and/or
switch to an open source OS. Don't buy products from
companies that behave in this way! Enough is enough. By
the way Amazon sells non DRM'd music now. Oh yeah
some Apple idiot is going to go off about how you can
burn a CD out of iTunes and remove DRM from Apple 's
music, but again since you didn't steal it in the first place
why do you have to fight to use it with other devices?
