Strange debate...

I administer a network of Windows, Mac, Linux and Unix systems. I have found that the question, "Which system is best?" is incomplete. To simply say that one is better is not always so. The question is, "Which system is better at task XYZ?" We have Windows tasks that cannot be done on other systems, as we do Linux and Mac. We benchmarked our analysis applications on Mac and x86 Linux clusters. The Mac got the crap kicked out of it on both a per-CPU and a per-dollar basis. We were unable to configure a faster Mac system, and that was with the Apple employees on site trying to make it happen so we'd buy. But there are other programs that either won't run on x86 or run slower. This debate is ridiculous as long as it focuses on "the best" rather than "the best for..."
