Yup, the kernal is good.

True, when they were developing OS/2 IBM developed the kernal and MS developed the GUI. They both released it in slightly different versions. IBM kept the GUI out of the kernal, and MS put the GUI into the kernal. So you're correct. Strip the GUI and all of the other junk that has been dumped into the kernal and the kernal is very competent.
