Blu-ray took computing while HD-DVD was idle
Another big factor that seems to have an effect on the video player war is that Blu-ray expanded into other markets.

With the PS3 using Blu-ray disks for its game distribution, the format had an immediate manufacturing boost. The PS3s themselves also serve to help boost Blu-ray video purchases as they serve as a video player as well.

In computing, the Blu-ray format design is an advantage with higher storage and faster read/write speeds. The majority of PC manufacturers now offer Blu-ray writeable drives with their PCs while HD-DVD is shunned except by its parent company.

Why did this happen? PC based HD-DVD writers can only record at 1x (36 Mbps) which is 4 times slower than a 16x DVD drive. No computer nut wants to "upgrade" to something slower. Meanwhile, Blu-ray writers are running at 4x and 6x speed making them worthwile in addition to the higher storage capacity.

The scratch resistance also seems to be a leading edge for those who look to a hard format drive with cheap media to back up information. Back-ups are not worth their salt if they are damaged easily by scratches.

Even if HD-DVD can make somewhat of a comeback in the video player market, Blu-ray took an even greater lead in other significant areas, computing and gaming.
