Not quite correct.
I worked at Best Buy over the holidays, and your statement about the "number one reason" is not entirely accurate. While people did return HDTVs because of picture quality, many of the problems were caused by lack of understanding or poor configuration:

1) Not using the right connection for source. This was a recurring problem where people used composite I/O instead of component or HDMI. The inflated prices of HDMI cables were most often a factor.

2) Not having proper cable service. Many customers were deceived by the local cable company into believing they had HD service when in fact they did not. Instead of complaining to the cable company or the utilities board, they thought the problem was with the TV.

3) Not using an upscaling DVD player. When we showed customers the picture from a standard DVD on an upscaling player on HDTV, we almost always made the sale for the new DVD player as well as the TV. But most big-box retailers (and Walmart of course) don't have coordinated sales staff, so a novice customer can easily walk in, buy something that doesn't make sense, and not get any help.

We did have a number of people purchase HD players, but in the main they took one look at the exorbitant prices of the disks and said "no thanks". Most of the Blu-ray disk sales came from people who already had a PS3 in the shopping cart, not a stand-alone unit. That decision was probably the best one that Sony made in this whole mess.
