- Let's shine some light on this...

I can't help but stand back and chuckle at how the telcos have suddenly got the religion about VoIP. Their current plan seems to be to convince everyone that they are needed when in fact they are not, or soon won't be.
Currently they have one strangle hold and that's when the user wants to place a call to a traditional analog phone system/number. (From the internet to the traditional phone network.) Communicating between two internet based systems requires nothing more than the existing hardware and one of several free software packages.
As can clearly be seen by the current trends, and by President Bush's call to have broadband everywhere in the US, the writing is on the wall. The traditional phone network is about to be completely replaced. Yes it may take a few more years but it is already happening. (Note the rise of IM.)
The Telcos aren't blind to this trend or that it means the milk cow is about to die and the old monthly fee to have a twisted pair ran to the house is all but over. (Come on cable companies!) The Telcos have little choice but to try and find/design/bull ship users into believing they need a middle man to make it all work. And just to fatten the wallet, the monthly fees are GREATER than it was for the old twisted pair.
The real problem (and the reason they are jumping in feet first) is they know that as the internet spreads they simply have no function and certainly not one that requires a monthly fee. They MUST get in now, convince users they are indispensable, and then hope lethargy keeps customers tied to them.
Folks, all I am saying is that while right now they may be needed, that need is VERY short lived and the consumer would do well to make certain they can wave good bye to them when the time comes... - Posted by: No_Ax_to_Grind Posted on: 07/22/04 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
