I use a palm Tungsten C, which you can find online for $280+. I can listen to MP3s (even as background to other PDA activities, like playing a game):

With a 1GB SD card, I have two full length movies, a few music videos, a dozen music albums, over 100 E-books (and hundreds of smaller texts), all loaded at the same time. I don't have to use any proprietary or DRM'd file formats, and can easily convert new material for mobile use. I can watch two movies back to back on a single charge, and get extended (but still mobile) battery time with a cheap external battery:

Of course, the unit also has WiFi (web browser, ssh, ftp, etc.), so I can access streaming material or download additional material on the fly.

None of the "new" media players that seem to be generating so much hype can do even a quarter of this, yet they cost much more. Why are these devices getting any media attention, other than the restrictions they impose (that are marketed as "features")???
