I had not even considered that. Sony has done this to PS3 owners - PS2 games don't work with the latest PS3 because it saved Sony money. So what if they decide "we're just not going to make this thing play DVDs anymore, it'll be good for the public." Now Sony's not the only game, but they could do something like this and they have.
