RE: Blu-ray vs. HD DVD: I don't care who wins!
It may be futile, but I'm still pulling for HD-DVD. I have a library of over 500 DVDs that I could never afford to replace with a new format. Some may never be available in the new high-def formats.
My library is why I'm hoping for HD-DVD. The way it was explained to me, HD-DVD is a furthurance of the current DVD standard. Because of this, HD-DVD players are natively compatible with DVDs and will always be able to play them.
Blu-Ray is a totally new technology and standard that is incompatible with current DVDs, so manufacturers have to "build in" that compatibility.
So, who is going to guarantee me that, if BluRay wins, at some future date, they won't dump the backwards compatibility aspect for regular DVDs and I won't end up with 500 shiny coasters?
