bringing your clue: he's saying japan is small, therefore it's FAR easier, and FAR cheaper to lay out the infrastructure needed to bring FTH to the entire country.

fiber from cost to coast in japan only has to go, what, couple hundred miles or a bit more?

fiber from coast to coast in america has to go 2000+ miles

which do you think is more expensive and cost prohibative?

sure, technology creates the speeds, but people digging in the ground and laying thousands of miles of fiber are the ones that bring the bits to the house.
