You can use it pretty much manually, without iTunes, just treat it
as an external hard drive. Not sure if Music Match works on the
newer iPods, but that's how PC users used to interface before
iTunes for Windows was released, so try that.

---How can you tell a 4th generation model from previous ones
based on the name alone?---

There are differences between most generations, placement of
buttons, overall size, whether it can interface with a dock. The
new generation can be identified because the buttons are now
located within the scroll wheel, and the wheel itself is grey,
rather than white.
