It's easy to use
You can use it as a simple external hard disk just like your flash
player, you can have iTunes update it everytime you plug it into
your computer automatically or you can manually update it;
iPod is designed to be a mirror of your iTunes music library -
you cannot share music files from your iPod to other computers
and I am assuming that if you did not upload your music
through iTunes to your iPod you will not be able to listen to the
music unless it is being used as a peripheral to a computer.

Like any product, if you have no intention of using it for what it
is designed, don't count on your workarounds to deliver what
you are expecting.

If you want a way to listen to music, transfer files, backup
important data, etc. the iPod and iTunes design are perfect for
that. If you have a Mac, you can use the iPod as a startup disk as
well, so I keep Tech Tools on mine in case I ever have a problem
starting up one of my Macs.
