Nobody can beat Intel at their own game
Thanks to Meyer and others, AMD has got an excellent engineering team. They can do wonders and, like it or not, Barcelona is a beautiful piece of engineering. However, good engineering will not save them. Nobody can successfully compete with a Goliath like Intel at their own game and on their own playground. AMD must find their own way if they don't want to keep playing the me-too fiddle and eventually become just a footnote in the history of computing. Sure, they can continue to do what they're doing for the next year or two but they need an ace in the hole that will push them to the front of the race. They need something that will knock everybody's socks off, a new technology that solves a number of pressing problems in the industry in one fell swoop. It can be done and Ruiz is the man to do it. It's going to take major huevos because he must be willing to take risks. He must not count on Meyer to see the future for him. Engineers are rarely visionaries. He must bring someone else on board (not a yes man) that can look at the problem from a new angle and offer a rational solution. The solution is within their reach, in my opinion.
