Indeed.
I am not talking about the overall appearance of an item, but it "capabilities", real or imagined: a simple "fake" prop.

The transporter in the series is activated with a simple wave of the hand over a series of bars on what is basiclly a giant touchscreen control panel (where as in the early series I believe it was three physical control levers), the ship "steered" on trusters by moviving their fingers over a circular touch screen control surface.

Are products like the iPhone just the natural, inevitable progression of things, or can an idea be born from an aficionado of a series that has the idea "That would work great on our next generation music player!"

The overall function of the iPhone bears a remarkable likeness in terms of how the unit works compared to what is seen in the series from 10 years earlier. Yes, it does take time for the technology to catch up to the idea, and many ideas have been floated out there for years.

It was not meant to imply that the series is where the idea actually came from, just pondering how much technology today resembles these props seen in the past.
