What a silly story.
When you wanted to swap from vinyl to cassettes, you had 2 choices, buy all your
music new and throw away the vinyl. Or you could record, in real time, all your
music from vinyl to cassette.. a lot of time and work.

The the CD came out, but recording to cd from vinyl or a cassette is even more
work, something very few people have done... most just bought all their music
again on CD, even with the outrageous CD prices.

and then "free" downloading came along.. mp3 format.. which is compatible with all
players, including iPods/iTunes. And Apple on their own introduced a simple and
easy way to buy songs for the iPod... and if you want to use it on another player,
non-iPod or cd player.. just burn a CD and either play it or import it.. That's all.

And for the industry standard part... if any, the most logical would be the one that
plays on the majority of players.. the iPod.
