"Basically, it's all about selling a gadget subsidized by some kind of subscription that garantees long-term income by tying users to your product line and extracting regular payments from you. Apple has mastered this with the iPod-iPhone-iTunes machine."

Although they are talking about subscriptions, I haven't seen it yet, and I seriously doubt it will be required.

It is still very much possible - and yes, even common - for people to just use the iPod and rip their CDs to it.

"(Notice that you have to load iTunes to fully use your iPhone, even if you have no interest at all in downloading music)"

iTunes is free. You're not subscribed to anything (except maybe AT&T for the iPhone), and you don't make regular payments.

You can buy an iPod and never pay Apple a dime after that - and that's exactly what most people do. Ripping a CD collection to an iPod is a very common practice, and Steve Jobs knows it and talked about it in his open letter about DRM.

Almost a year ago, Steve Jobs admitted that under 3% of the music found on iPods is from iTunes - 97% is obtained from other sources.
