RE: The man behind the Commodore 64
Tramiel and his sons are idiots. After he went to Atari he alienated all of his vendors. They didn't appreciate the way he did business. Retail outlets refused to sell his crap and his warehouse was filling up with merchandise that he couldn't unload. To solve this problem he bought The Federated Group for 60+ million dollars. He told the employees that the company is in great shape and he is going to help with advertising, cash flow and inventory. His idea of help was: Cash flow - 2 weeks severence pay to 70% of the employees. Advertising - little blurbs at the end of Atari commercials that said "Available at Federated". Inventory - flooded the stores with Atari crap. He raised the prices of merchandise 50% for a couple weeks then dropped the price 25% and announced a BIG SALE! It didn't take consumers long to figure this out and he ran The Federated Group into bankruptcy. Instead of paying his bills to vendors, he would give them office equipment, merchandise etc. At one point he even paid a bill by giving the vendor a brand new HP tape drive for the HP3000. Problem was, it was leased from HP. They weren't happy.
