Failure of the "desk-lamp" iMac
Ultimately, I think the iMac failed because it was too different and too expensive. People are only willing to invest in a new form factor when they see some tangible benefit. The iMac's limitations (in terms of expandability and upgradability) made it a tough sell compared to your run-of-the-mill beige box. Now, consider that, even with these limitations, an iMac currently sells for at least $1300 for the 1 GHZ version. I'm typing this message on a machine that's 3 GHZ and cost me half that. For that kind of value, I'll dispense with the cool swivel screen. (And yes, admittedly, it's cool.)

You can talk all day about awesome new technologies that iMac brings to the dance. At the end of the day, though, it's affordable technologies that most people are drawn to, and that's why Macs have always been less popular than PCs. If Apple wants to really make a killing, they Jobs & Co. should license out the architecture and sell the software to the licensees. That way, they'd be playing to their strengths, which are innovation and software development. By clinging to the architecture side, Apple limits their appeal to the tech-savvy, income-heavy consumers, and there just aren't as many of those.

Incidentally, this is off-topic, but does anyone know what happened to the ability to put HTML code in posts? I've tried it in several posts, and it seems to be broken lately..
