First, there was a short news story on the new iMac that
indicated that it was in a normal pre-production run to ensure
everything was as working as planned.

Second, Apple indicated that they had hoped to have the new
iMac ready for shipment mid-July.

Doesn't take a rocket scientist to guess that there was a
component problem. Worked well in the prototype stage, but
not the production version? Motherboard? Graphics card? Apple
isn't saying, but it looks like their original plans to ship the new
iMac was properly timed - announced at WWDC and delivered 2
weeks later.

At least Apple bit the bullet by waiting to deliver until things are
right. A better situation than Intel recalling a mass of chip sets.

As for the design, after using boxes for years I was ready to pull
the trigger on a 20" iMac in January. I love the idea of getting
rid of the mass of cables and the box - just like with a laptop.
Decided to go with a PowerBook (one was needed for business)
and then get an iMac after the G5 was released. Figured if I
preferred the current range I could always get one from Apple at
a discount after the G5 was out - oops . . .
