- What problem?

3% of the market does not care? Maybe, but from my own observations more people would be on a Mac if they could justify the cost.
Most people use their computers for minimum tasks. It doesn't take much to surf, email, and do common word processing and spreadsheets, so your common $1000 pc is OK.
When you get into other areas like video you need more computer, and by the time you configure a PC to something equivalent to the new G5, you've spent a lot more than the average Dell. (I read Dell's average website order is reported to be $1600)
I've been a computer professional for twenty years and have supported just about every desktop OS you can name. I supported Macs several years ago and wasn't a fan.
Then came OS X and I thought I'd give it a try. No benchmarks, no advertising, just some real world tests doing what I like to do.
My 3GHZ/768ram PC at work running XP still gives me an hourglass to look at more often than I like.
Ripping a DVD on my PC takes nearly 100% processor utilization. The G5 (1.8GHZ/512ram) I tested ripped the same DVD 20% faster and never went over 20% processor utlilization. Everything I tested on the G5 gave the impression that things happen immediately. Perception (for a lot of people) is reality, so I bought a G5.
Can you get a faster PC? Maybe. But to make it as stable and secure as the new Macs you will need to dump Windows and install Linux. And the problem with desktop Linux (which I run on my home PC) is the lack of apps, especially multimedia.
With OS X, I get a mainstream operating system, with a ton of commercial apps available, some of the best engineered hardware available, and the ability (using X11) to run my favorite Linux/Unix apps.
So if you don't like Apple and want something like it on a Windows platform, wait about 3 or 4 years for Longhorn. - Posted by: altereqo Posted on: 11/11/03 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
