Poor Comparisons
1) Adobe Premiere is no longer available on the Mac
Platform and has not been optimized for the G5. Apparently
the performance of Final Cut Pro on the G5 is superb - it
has been optimized for the G5 and is not available for the
PC. Note that most video professionals have moved to Final
Cut as it is now considered a much better product than
Premiere.

2) MP3 is inferior in quality to AAC - currently only offered
by Apple. AAC represents a open license to the closed
alternative of WMA. Apple is curently the only vendor
providing a choice to endorse an open license. They also
make arguably the best jukebox/music store available to
any platform. Was the MP3 test optimized for altivec code?

3) Quake 3 was a port of software designed for the Intel
architecture.

My conclusion is somewhat different than yours. Why buy
hardware whan you can buy an computer instead.
Something that integrates software and hardware and
provides a cohesive experience. Something that is
integrated from concept through design to manufacturing.
Apple has succeeded as a company through support of its
customers. This existed through hardware disparities
between Itel an Power PC architectures. Why? Because Apple
provides a cohesive experience.

My conclusion regarding cost is different as well. Apple
gives me the only opportunity now available to purchase
this level of inegration in a system at a desktop level. Is it
worth it? Clearly not for you - but that's what makes our
conclusions different. I consider computers important -
worth paying for in fact. I don't find Apple's price at all
unreasonable and considering what is built in to these
boxes - it is extremely competitive. Bear in mind that my
focus is on the computing experience in it's entirety. What
is your focus? With the purchase of a G5 comes Panther, an
OS that brings many of the features that Longhorn might
have in 2 years. Worthwhile? Not to you apparently.

At the end of the day, not paying a little extra for this
integration is your prerogative. While you're patting yourself
on the back for a few seconds difference in a series of
incosequential or inconclusive tests - do consider the
limited scope of your conclusions. Also consider, as Apple
vaults ahead of the PC platform with both software and
hardware innovations including backwards compatible 64
bit desktops - that choosing the cheapest path is not
always something to be proud of.
