2.5 times slower & more expensive G5, but Apple is happy.
Macworld journal, Dec. 2003, p. 60

Application tests (by Macworld) - Alienware vs. G5:

G5 is not only slower than Alienware but is more expensive
too.

Adobe Premiere is 3 times faster on Alienware than on G5.
So, if Adobe Premiere is your primary application - you can
save at least $2,000 on a PC (to be equal with G5). It
means, that G5 in the video editing production is not just a
too expensive computer but G5 is overpriced far beyond of
any criteria of reasonability.

The same picture is in MP3 Encode (Alienware is 3 times
faster G5).

Alienware is only 2 times faster than G5 in MS Word. So, if
office applications take most of your time - G5 Mac is
TWICE more expensive than a PC.

Alienware is about 14% better than G5 in Quake III.

Photoshop tests are not completely valid because of Mac
Photoshop was optimized for 64-bit G5 and Panther (64-
bit Windows did not come yet to make a fair Photoshop
test). Therefore, G5 performance is slightly faster or about
the same with Alienware (but G5 should lose here when 64-
bit Windows and PC optimized Photoshop will come).

The only field where G5 is twice faster Alienware is MPEG-2
Encode (probably, because of 64-bit optimization).

Conclusion:

For the majority tasks - G5 Mac is about 2.5 times slower
than an equal PC = G5 Mac is about 2-2.5 times more
expensive than an equal PC (that's depend on many
factors). When 64-bit Windows will come - G5
(theoretically) will lose everywhere.

I am trying to say that Mac is not bad but is NOT the fastest
computer and G5 is extremely overpriced.

Bill Gates won the market not because he had the best
hardware and OS but because he was the best for the
consumers.

The major problem is 3% of the market does not care ...
