Can I play Duke Nukem Forever on Surface?
My bet is, we won't be seeing Surface surface any time
soon. My guess is years, rather than months. It seems
clear that Microsoft demoed their multi-touch
technology too soon, in a hasty effort to steal some of
Apple's thunder after the introduction of the iPhone in
February. Their biggest fear was that all future multi-
touch devices would come to be associated with Apple,
in the same way that digital music players are referred to
generically as "iPods." So, they took some snazzy
touchscreen research projects and cobbled them
together to look like an actual operating system.

The problem arises, though, when potential clients are
so blown away by the demo that they want to start
creating actual applications to run on this faux multi-
touch operating system. Only, things haven't been
thought through in that kind of detail yet, and with
Windows Vista under the hood, Microsoft needs to fix its
myriad of problems before adding yet another graphics
layer on top. So they're stuck now. They've shown their
buyers a picture of a mansion, but what they're really
selling is a beautiful facade attached to some
scaffolding, and built on a foundation of sand.
