PCs did things that were infeasible to do otherwise.
PCs were able to do things that had never really been done before. They can calculate math problems faster than any human, and totally changed the writing process: Copying, cutting, and pasting are now easy and quick, and the computer can check spelling and grammar, which no mechanical typewriter can do. Changing fonts and creating newspaper like layouts are now child's play, allowing the average Joe to do things that previously required factory sized machines.

The computer was totally revolutionary. It changed our lives considerably. In fact, without computers we wouldn't be having this conversation.

The "Surface," on the other hand, doesn't do anything you can't already do with a smaller, less bulky device. It doesn't look like it's going to be anywhere as near a drastic change as the personal computer.
