MS + Hardware = Rock + Hard Place

Microsoft has long wrestled with the fact that when they get into hardware they are competing against their own customers (OEMs). Its a bit of a catch-22 for them as OEMs don't always build great products (PlaysForSure is a good example) and that ends up appearing as if Microsoft is producing less than great products. On the flip side if they jump in a build it themselves they anger their own customers. They must also consider possible anti-trust issues if they get too far into the hardware side of it.

I have little doubt that MS could design some great *devices* (heck, hire away a couple Apple guys if nothing else) but that road leads to all sorts of problems.
