What I'd like to know is how a device that exists in a very early prototype stage
somehow beats a device that is out in the marketplace and has sold over a million?

And compares unfavorably in what way to a Windows Mobile/Symbian device? It
runs a better OS and has a UI that no other phone could ever dream of having,
thanks to the fact that it runs OS X (if you don't believe me, go out and use one).
Sure you might get a few features on the Windows Mobile / Symbian device that the
iPhone doesn't have (yet) but as demonstrated by the sales figures, quite a few
people don't want them happy

In regards to the second point, they are entirely different products. Surface is not a
phone, it's a table that costs over 5 grand that is incapable of doing anything
particularly useful. The iPhone is a phone that fits in your pocket. Apples and...
well... oranges.
