Why would Sony's move away from semiconductor R&D strike you as strange? Semiconductors is not their value add nor is it their core competence.
Let the semiconductor industry be the one to design and invest in semiconductors. Sony needs to stick to their knitting. Their idea of integrating vertically and assume responsibility for building and designing their own chips was a mistake and failure.
