Ringtones are a different market.
People will pay $2.00 or so for a 20 second ring tone because they only want a couple. Those who do music downloads want entire albums.

Ring tone downloads will either get very much cheaper or be dead very shortly. Most 3G phones allow you to create your own ring tones and load them onto the phone, so you can an entire track if you want and not pay the exorbitant rates for bits of downloaded tunes.

Phones have been able to be used as MP3s for ages, yet iPod became a success anyway. Phones will continue to increase in music playing capability, but they will never replace dedicated music players any more than cameras in phones have replaced digital cameras.

They will all co-exist in an ever more connected digital world
